The Type 1 AK-47 (officially adopted as just the "AK") is the original, first-production Kalashnikov rifle, manufactured in the Soviet Union from 1948 to 1951. It is highly distinct and considered one of the rarest historical AK variants in the world.

It is easily identified from the small bulge of metal that protrudes from the front of the receiver, just behind the foregrip.

Because Soviet factories lacked the advanced infrastructure needed to work with thin sheet metal, the receivers were prone to warping during the heat-treating process. This led to a high rejection rate, resulting in only about 80,000 being produced before production transitioned to the heavier, milled Type 2.
