The American Civil War (standardized name) was a conflict between the United States of America (referred to as The Union) & the unrecognized Confederate States of America (CSA) from 1861 to 1865. The war was fought over the future of slavery in the country, in which the CSA believed the newly elected President, Abraham Lincoln, was going to abolish slavery in the country. While this did happen later, becoming the war goal after the famous 1863 Emancipation Proclamation, Abraham Lincoln originally had no goal of abolishing slavery, but rather stopping it's expansion into the new territories.
In December of 1860 the State of South Carolina seceded from the USA, followed by ten more states in 1861, being (in order): Mississippi, Florida, Alabama, Georgia, Louisiana, Texas, Virginia, Arkansas, Tennessee, and North Carolina.
Additionally, the CSA also had the Arizona Territory, and claimed the states of Kentucky & Missouri, with the latter two never seceding. All ten Confederate states, alongside the non-seceded states of Kentucky & Missouri are represented on the the final first design of the national Confederate Flag by thirteen stars.
This began the bloodiest war in American history, with the bloodiest battle on American soil being the Battle of Gettysburg in July of 1863.
The war ended with the CSA losing & never gaining foreign recognition, despite attempts of diplomacy with the British. Unfortunately, the oppression of African-Americans continues until this day.
