German MiG-29 and Swiss F-18 over the Alps in April 2002. By 2003, all MiGs inherited from the GDR had been donated to Poland.
The aircraft, which was developed and manufactured in the Soviet Union, was delivered to the forces of the GDR from 1988. In 1990, the Luftwaffe took over twenty single-seaters and four two-seaters from the former NVA (Nationale Volksarmee). Having been slightly modified (GPS, Navigation- and IFF-system), it was also used in NATO airspace.
