The French Fifth Republic is the current system of government in France, established on October 4, 1958, under a constitution crafted by Charles de Gaulle. It replaced the unstable Fourth Republic by transitioning France to a semi-presidential (or dual-executive) system, significantly strengthening the authority of the presidency.
