  • On the day before the mission chronicled in Burrows' photo essay, Farley, 21 years old, goes on liberty in Da Nang with his gunner, 20-year-old Pfc. Wayne Hoilien. Larry Burrows—Time & Life Pictures/Getty Images

    ‎ ‎
"ON LIBERTY. In Da Nang the afternoon before the strike, Farley and his tow-headed gunner Hoilien, wearing civvies, enjoy rubbernecking at the ivory tusks, clay pots and stuffed sika deer that might be just the things to send home."

"On the day preceding the mission in helicopter Yankee Papa 13, crew chief Farley, who is 21, went on liberty in the town of Da Nang with his gunner, 20-year-old Pfc. Wayne Hoilien, to do some shopping and treat themselves to a non-mess-hall meal. Since neither one is exactly an old salt, they plunged into the marketplace like a brace of tourists. Farley insisted on going to a jewelry store right off because the jeweler back home in Tucson, Ariz. had given him the inside dope on what to look for when buying jade. Hoilien, who comes from Viroqua, Wis., was more interested in picking up a pair of custom-made shoes to rest his feet from the Marine Corps issue boondockers."
