"Varyag" The Russian name for the Varangians, a group of Vikings which settled in Rus during 8th Century, in Russian culture they're effectively just knights. The spelling with the hard sign at the end appears to be from Old Russian specifically, the font is a common archaic font similar in usage to gothic/blackletter.
