We were in contact with the enemy at about 800 meters. I had a sniper engaging targets while I was on the radio, trying to tell my boss we were about to right-flank and assault them up close.
Radio wasn't workin.
So we waited, holding our position under pressure, ready to move, watching, listening, thinking ten steps ahead. Eventually, we were told to stand down. The US Marines were going to take the position, a fortified mud castle (because of course it was).
Moments like that don't make the headlines, but they shape you. They teach patience, discipline, and the alue of trust in your team and leadership.
It wasn't about glory, it was about doing the job, being ready, and living through it to tell the story.
My boss took this photo as the USMC started their assault.
