  • F-16A Advanced Fighter Technology Integration

This photo depicts the AFTI F-16 in the configuration used midway through the program. The sensor pods were added to the fuselage, but the chin canards remained in place. Painted in non-standard gray tones, it carried Sidewinder air-to-air missles[sic] on its wingtips.

    F-16A Advanced Fighter Technology Integration

The NF-16A Advanced Fighter Technology Integration (AFTI) airframe (s/n 75-0750) in flight, near the Armstrong Flight Research Center (AFRC) in Edwards, California. Note the right 'shoulder' inline wing-root mounted Westinghouse FLIR & Laser Designator pod, air intake-mounted chin canards (taken from the previous F-16 CCV program, s/n 72-1567), extended spinal sensor suite, and wingtip-mounted AIM-9 Sidewinders. Photo taken partway through Phase 1 of the AFTI program. By Phase 2, the chin canards would be removed and additional sensor pods mounted forward of the cockpit.

There are a lot of extremely fascinating developments sprung out of AFTI, even beyond what this airframe in particular went through, but I’d love to direct anyone interested’s attention to my personal favorite facet of this program: the Voice Control System. Yes, there is a lady in my head who calls me studmuffin.
