Artist's commentary
This image comparison features August Schreitmüller’s sandstone sculpture, "The Goodness" (Güte), positioned on the Town Hall tower in Dresden, Germany.
The left photograph shows the sculpture overlooking the city center after it was firebombed by Allied forces on February 13-14, 1945, which left tens of thousands dead and most of the city leveled.
The right photograph, taken from the same spot on February 12, 2015, shows the fully reconstructed city, including the area below the statue that became a parking lot.
