Artist's commentary

  • Original
  • Captured German dugout

Four soldiers in a captured German dugout. Inside there is a lantern, table and chairs, and a few pictures on the wall. One soldier holds a record, whilst another cleans or fixes a gramophone. A dugout was a shelter dug into the wall of a trench. Their sizes varied from the one-man 'cubbyhole' to deep underground chambers which could accommodate several soldiers. [Original reads: 'SCENES ON THE WESTERN FRONT. In a captured German dugout. The Germans have made some very fine dugouts.']
