Artist's commentary

  • Original
  • A Photograph Showing Off The Speedbrake of a Sopwith 1 1/2 Strutter.

    "We did severall stall turns
on the way back and a tight spiral down from 4,000 feet. He put his air
brakes on about 1,500 feet and couldn't get them off again, and he
was under-shooting and required his engine, he was in a bit of a flap!
However, the tail didn't drop off despite excessive vibration and we
    made the small aerodrome alright."
-Diary of Squadron Leader C P O Bartlett DSC 29 September, 1916, as published in In The Teeth Of The Wind.
