  • The death of General d'Elbée - Julien Le Blant, 1878

La mort du Général D'ELBEE par LE BLANT (Jules)

"Condemned to death, he was executed by firing squad in the public square of the town of Noirmoutier. He was shot sitting in a chair, since he was unable to stand due to his fourteen wounds." - Wikipedia - Maurice d'Elbée

"Maurice d'Elbée was interrogated by the representatives on mission and by General Turreau at an uncertain date. The minutes of his interrogation were written by François Piet. The former generalissimo was executed between 6 and 9 January. Unable to walk, he was carried in an armchair to the Place d'Armes, accompanied by Pierre Duhoux d'Hauterive and Pierre Prosper Gouffier de Boisy. Jean-Conrad Wieland was added to them despite the denials of his co-accused who tried in vain to clear him. The four men were then tied to posts and shot" Wikipedia - Battle of Noirmoutier (1794)

"The chair d'Elbée was executed in remained within his family until 1975, when his relative Marquis Charles Maurice d'Elbée donated the chair to the Vendée Museum in the Château de Noirmoutier." - Wikipedia - Maurice d'Elbée

"D'Elbée was placed in an armchair and shot, along with Duhoux d'Hauterive and de Boissy; his female relatives and Wielard—who had surrendered Noirmoutier to Charette—met the same fate.

The handling of space and the arrangement of the figures are reminiscent of another work by J. Le Blant, *The Execution of General de Charette at Place Viarme*, created at a later date (1883)." - puystory
