Captain of Company E "Buncombe Rifles" 1st NC Infantry
"William Wallace McDowell. McDowell organized the Buncombe Rifleman North Carolina Volunteers Company E, the first Confederate troops in western North Carolina. The house is restored with period rooms and special history exhibits.
